The foundations of PRINCE2 were laid in 1989 when the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) published a version of the PROMPT II methodology, known as PRINCE, in the United Kingdom. Accordingly, the name PRINCE comes from the letters in the phrase ‘PROMPT II IN the CCTA Environment’. The current PRINCE2 methodology was introduced to the sector in 1996. It became a popular method with its widespread use in the British public system. The project management methodology currently used by the United Nations is parallel to PRINCE2.
PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a methodology used in project management to reduce project risks. This methodology determines the stages that projects must go through and standardises steps such as planning, execution, monitoring and control throughout the project life cycle, making project management more controlled and efficient.
PRINCE2 is particularly used for the effective execution of large-scale and complex projects. It facilitates the effective identification of project risks, simplifies stakeholder communication and control, and allows for better focus on business objectives.
Key Elements of the PRINCE2 Methodology:
- Principle: The seven business principles that form the basis of PRINCE2 (e.g. Business Justification Must Always Be Present).
- Theme: Issues that must be addressed throughout the project (e.g. Business Justification, Organisation, Quality).
- Process: Steps that manage the project lifecycle (e.g. Initiate, Manage, Deliver).
- Roles and Responsibilities: Defines the roles and duties of the project team.
- Tailoring: Adjusting the methodology to the specific needs of the project.
There are two different certifications: PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner.
- PRINCE2 Foundation: Provides a basic understanding of the PRINCE2 methodology and principles. It is an entry-level certification.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner: Provides the skills necessary to effectively apply the methodology in real-world projects. You must obtain the Foundation certification to qualify for this certification. It is preferred by senior project managers.
Why should you obtain PRINCE2 certification?
- Globally recognised: PRINCE2 is a methodology used by Project Management Professionals worldwide. It is particularly important in projects with British public bodies and organisations.
- Adaptable: The framework provides a structured and efficient approach that can be adapted to suit any project.
- Career Development: The PRINCE2 certification opens doors to new opportunities by demonstrating your expertise and commitment to project success. This highly respected certification paves the way for finding work as a project manager in the UK, Australia, and Europe.
- Increased Earning Potential: Certified PRINCE2 specialists typically earn higher salaries and enjoy greater job security.
